It can be difficult for a parent to hear that their child isn’t reading yet, struggles to sit through an activity, needs extra help with writing, or hasn’t mastered a skill that other children their age seem to have figured out.

But childhood development isn’t a race—and it certainly isn’t a straight line.

Children learn in different ways, at different speeds, and through different experiences. One child may be an early reader while another is an incredible builder, storyteller, problem-solver, artist, or observer. Sometimes, the abilities we’re most eager to measure are only a small part of what a child is actually learning.

Instead of only asking, “What can’t they do yet?” perhaps we should also ask:

✨ What are they curious about?
💛 What makes them feel confident?
🌱 Where have they already grown?
🧠 How do they learn best?

Supporting children doesn’t mean removing expectations. It means giving them the right experiences, encouragement, practice, and time to develop those skills without making them believe that struggling means they are incapable.
